Oteil Burbridge: Blessed Are the Peacemakers
Posted by Lana on Aug 28, 2007 - 03:25 PM (2800 Reads)

For: Jambands.com

The long and storied career of Oteil Burbridge extends from Washington, D.C to Atlanta to Birmingham, Alabama while playing in some of the greatest jambands in music history. His bass playing, whether it be with the six string or the Fender 4-string he utilizes with the Allman Brothers Band, has set new standards in a genre which continually challenges musicians to create new sounds within an old framework, the live stage. Jambands.com caught up with Burbridge during the beginning of ABB’s most recent tour with Bob Weir’s RatDog. Burbridge has had a busy summer. Prior to the Allman dates, he toured for two months with his band the Peacemakers which also included dates with another legendary jam gem—Hot Tuna. If that wasn’t enough to satisfy the musician’s musician in Burbridge, he also recently reunited with fellow Aquarium Rescue Unit and ex-Brother band member, guitarist Jimmy Herring for a series of dates while recording an album with a improvisatory unit called Go There which also features his older brother and Derek Trucks Band keyboardist and flutist, Kofi Burbridge. However, Oteil does know how to “slow everything back down” as the reader will see in this conversation with one of jamband’s most enduring musical icons.

Conversation With Oteil Burbridge

By: Doug Collette
For: State of Mind Music

Is there a more ebullient modest musician on the planet than Oteil Burbridge? When he was reminded that this year is his tenth anniversary with The Allman Brothers Band, he chortled and almost never stopped throughout the conversation…at least when he discussed his role in the mythic southern band.

Burbridge became solemn and soulful in his discussion to become a professional musician rather than take a working job. Yet every string of conversation led back to passion for music and warmth for his comrades, which are the most notable virtues he displays in whatever musical context he finds himself.

Burbridge invariably becomes a lynchpin of the proceedings at hand. His combustible exchanges with Jimmy Herring are highlights of the all-too-infrequent Aquarium Rescue Unit gigs these days. Burbridge unabashedly relishes his spotlights with the Allman Brothers Band, whether it’s a bass solo (scat or not), a turn on the drums (as happened at The Beacon this past March), or the lead vocal turn where he lends due passion to Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” or the more recent takes on Derek & The Dominos’ “AnyDay.”

It's not about preaching," said bassist Oteil Burbridge, who brings a unique mix of spirituality and funk to a Mobile club Saturday evening. "It's all about love and hope and forgiveness and compassion."

And for listeners who don't necessarily know what they're getting into, it's about one more thing as well: "They should expect to get their faces rocked off," Burbridge said.

As luck would have it, Mobile is one of four cities in on a limited tour combining some very promising building blocks:

Burbridge himself is a renowned instrumentalist, particularly in the jam-band scene, and he has a resume to show that his reputation is deserved. Aside from serving as bassist for the Allman Brothers Band since 1997, he was a member of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, an influential jam/Southern Rock group founded by Col. Bruce Hampton. Though he has been involved in numerous other collaborations, the Peacemakers are his primary solo outlet.

On the current run of shows, he's being joined by a special guest who holds a particularly lofty place in the jam pantheon: guitarist Jimmy Herring, who was tapped last fall to take over the lead guitar spot in Widespread Panic.

Music Comes First with Oteil & the Peacemakers

For: Everything Alabama

Days after, I'm still mulling the incredible blend of raw material I heard heated to the welding point on Saturday by Oteil Burbridge and the Peacemakers.

Mahavishnu Orchestra and fusion-era Miles Davis, to be sure. And AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, both of whom were quoted in the show's opening riffs. And Hank Williams Sr., whose "Kaw-Liga" got a thunderous cover. And probably a whole bunch more that I enjoyed without necessarily identifying them.

The early surprise, given Burbridge's personal reputation and excitement over the participation of Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring, was the phenomenal skill of the Peacemakers. Burbridge's young sidemen were talented and confident enough that Herring took the role of a friend among equals, rather than a big fish visiting a small bowl.

Music Burbridge has played a key role in Southern rock

The Aspen Times
By Stewart Oksenhorn
September 3, 2006

Some consider Washington, D.C. a part of the South. But Oteil Burbridge, who was born and raised in the capital city, has been to the South and breathed it in, and Washington isn't it.

Burbridge, who lives now in Birmingham, Ala., after a stretch of several years in Atlanta, has been the bassist for two quintessential Southern bands. In the late '80s, while living in Atlanta, Burbridge was part of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, visionary singer-guitarist Col. Bruce Hampton's obscenely talented band. In 1997, Burbridge was invited to join a rejuvenating version of the great Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band.

In his native Washington, Burbridge, like all his siblings, learned piano and violin. Oteil also started playing drums at 5 and, sensing opportunity, added the bass guitar to his arsenal at 14.

"Back then, and probably still now, there's a shortage of bass players," he explained. "So I ended up getting a lot more work on that."

Allman bassist brings eclectic tastes to classic rock band
Posted by Lana on Aug 18, 2006 - 05:55 AM (4415 Reads)
All Topics By: Jon Dawson
For: The Kinston Free Press

Oteil Burbridge has played bass in The Allman Brothers Band going on a decade now, and he also has his own band, Oteil & The Peacemakers, which will be opening The Allman Brothers show at Raleigh’s Altell Pavilion on Saturday night. Burbridge talked with Free Press interviewer Jon Dawson last week about the Peacemakers, the Allmans and his taste in music.

FP: What songs are currently making up the Peacemakers setlist?

Burbridge: For the most part we try to concentrate on the new album. We also do a few songs from the second record, and maybe two from the first one. We also do a few covers, such as Hendrix, “Green Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf; I’m about to introduce a George Jones song into the set; some Sly Stone, some Hank Williams Sr.

FP: With a set like that a live album can’t be that far away.

Burbridge: That’s what I really want to do ... really a live DVD, because you need to see it to get the full scope of what’s going on. We included a DVD on our second studio album (“The Family Secret”) that was pretty much a documentary about making the album, but things really happen in the live set.

FP: What’s the best way for fans of Oteil & The Peacemakers to buy the three albums that you’ve recorded?

Burbridge: We’re on iTunes, we’re in Borders book stores, and you can buy it straight from the record company via links on www.oteilburbridge.com. We also sell them at our live shows.

FP: How long will your solo set be when you open for the Allman Brothers at Altell?

Burbridge: I think we’ll have a 45-minute set.

Always at one with his music

Music Bass guitarist Oteil Burbridge splits his creative energies between two bands, but he finds that it gives his musical exploration a yin-yang balance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what do you call him, a Brother or a Peacemaker?

Pose that question to Oteil Burbridge, the immensely popular and sought-after bass guitar innovator, and he is likely to be hard pressed in giving a definitive reply.

For now, the easy answer is "both."

For nine years, Burbridge has been bassist for the forefathers of Southern rock, the Allman Brothers Band. Critics and fans alike have credited his sound as a key component in the ensemble's shift from a classic rock staple to a jam-band favorite.

But when the Allmans are off the road, which they are for roughly half of the year, Burbridge leads his own band of merry groove merchants -- a soul, funk and fusion ensemble known as the Peacemakers.

"If you want a simple definition of our music in two or three words, you're screwed," laughs Grammy-nominated bassist and bandleader Oteil Burbridge. "Some things you can't categorize. Good Lord, it's like if I asked you to describe Salvador Dali's style in three words. Come on."

Burbridge and his backing band, The Peacemakers, may not be on an official mission from a higher power this season, but they're carrying on like a pack of a spiritually mature improv artists determined to spread the good message. With their newly-released album Believer, the vibes are positive, the grooves are upbeat, and the theme is full of hope and joy.

Memorable Quotes

Oteil is the best out there. He is the Michael Jordan of bass, but he never loses the groove. I can’t even describe how much fun it is to play with him. If you don’t enjoy listening to Oteil, you must be listening sideways.
