It's not about preaching," said bassist Oteil Burbridge, who brings a unique mix of spirituality and funk to a Mobile club Saturday evening. "It's all about love and hope and forgiveness and compassion."
And for listeners who don't necessarily know what they're getting into, it's about one more thing as well: "They should expect to get their faces rocked off," Burbridge said.
As luck would have it, Mobile is one of four cities in on a limited tour combining some very promising building blocks:
Burbridge himself is a renowned instrumentalist, particularly in the jam-band scene, and he has a resume to show that his reputation is deserved. Aside from serving as bassist for the Allman Brothers Band since 1997, he was a member of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, an influential jam/Southern Rock group founded by Col. Bruce Hampton. Though he has been involved in numerous other collaborations, the Peacemakers are his primary solo outlet.
On the current run of shows, he's being joined by a special guest who holds a particularly lofty place in the jam pantheon: guitarist Jimmy Herring, who was tapped last fall to take over the lead guitar spot in Widespread Panic.

Burbridge has played a key role in Southern rock
The Aspen Times

Some consider Washington, D.C. a part of the South. But Oteil Burbridge, who was born and raised in the capital city, has been to the South and breathed it in, and Washington isn't it.
Burbridge, who lives now in Birmingham, Ala., after a stretch of several years in Atlanta, has been the bassist for two quintessential Southern bands. In the late '80s, while living in Atlanta, Burbridge was part of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, visionary singer-guitarist Col. Bruce Hampton's obscenely talented band. In 1997, Burbridge was invited to join a rejuvenating version of the great Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band.
In his native Washington, Burbridge, like all his siblings, learned piano and violin. Oteil also started playing drums at 5 and, sensing opportunity, added the bass guitar to his arsenal at 14.
"Back then, and probably still now, there's a shortage of bass players," he explained. "So I ended up getting a lot more work on that."

Bass guitarist Oteil Burbridge splits his creative energies between two bands, but he finds that it gives his musical exploration a yin-yang balance.

So what do you call him, a Brother or a Peacemaker?
Pose that question to Oteil Burbridge, the immensely popular and sought-after bass guitar innovator, and he is likely to be hard pressed in giving a definitive reply.
For now, the easy answer is "both."
For nine years, Burbridge has been bassist for the forefathers of Southern rock, the Allman Brothers Band. Critics and fans alike have credited his sound as a key component in the ensemble's shift from a classic rock staple to a jam-band favorite.
But when the Allmans are off the road, which they are for roughly half of the year, Burbridge leads his own band of merry groove merchants -- a soul, funk and fusion ensemble known as the Peacemakers.
