As the last Oteil & Friends shows of 2024 coincided with the passing of @phillesh we felt the gravity and had heavier hearts going into the weekend. But we celebrated him and his many decades of gifts to us by really putting our hearts into this music. I thought it was really fitting for Jason Crosby to sing Unbroken Chain considering how much time he spent playing with Phil over many years. Thank you Denver for making this weekend so memorable. My heart goes out to all the family, friends and fans of @phillesh today. Many tears will be shed tonight as the news that we have lost another one of the founding fathers or our scene spreads. Phil was singular. He had the simply best electric bass tone ever. And he was a total revolutionary conceptually. His approach was so unique that it took me a minute to realize what an enormous part of the mystery of the Grateful Dead sound was in his hands. There were absolutely no hard and fast rules other than to have good intention and be 100% true to the moment. “Never play it the same way once!” might be my favorite quote of his. That kind of fearlessness is rare and was even considered subversive by some. That’s the mark of a true artist. But I think one of Phil’s most loving contributions is his musical generosity towards all of us in the next generations. His openness and desire to welcome younger players of all stripes onstage with him was clear. It was great to see him give so many the opportunity to carry this music forward in so many different ways. The last time I saw him was very recently when I got to play drums with him as part of the Dark Star-A-Thon thanks to @jasoncrosbymusic. We got to visit with him afterwards at his house. I’m also grateful for the few times we got to hang out at Terrapin Crossroads to just chat for a minute. He was always so kind to me. He’s still teaching me a lot every time I hear another Dead Show and he does something he never did before. There are always some hidden “Easter eggs”that I find listening to old shows. Little unexpected gems. I bet he surprised himself musically as much as anyone else. That’s the kind of legacy any artist hopes to leave behind. #ripphillesh #gratefuldeadforever

This Oteil & Friends run was different... something happened from the very first song and didn’t stop - change was in the air! For starters @melvinseals was back with a vengeance. Wow! We’re so lucky to get to play with him on a nightly basis. And what better way to end the run than at @capitoltheatre . That entire staff is always so kind to us. It was so great to be back in Boston last night! I saw so many friends going back 30 years. We played some Col. Lucky for me Lemonade is my favorite drink. And we made some in Los Angeles! Even though Melvin was sick and couldn’t play last night we came up with a surprise for the fans. We did this set non stop with all the songs segued. Blue Sky> Franklin’s> Mercy Mercy Mercy> Liz Reed> Slipknot> Friend of the Lithium> Liz Reed> Blue Sky And we were blessed to have Bill Asher bring Wolf 2.0 (#4 of 10), a tribute to Jerry Garcia’s iconic Irwin Wolf guitar. Asher worked with Irwin over the last 2 years to create this Certified limited run of Master built Wolf guitars to continue the tone and legacy of both Doug Irwin and Jerry Garcia. John Mayer got the first prototype in 2022. Mayer has played his live at several shows. Last night, Steve Kimock could hardly put it down it was feeling so good! The crowd in Los Angeles was dancing as hard as any we’ve had this run. It was a really special night. I can never say that my best days are behind me. The Final Tour last year taught me that yet again. I hardly believed that we could ever top what we did then. But then along came the Sphere. I can’t imagine what the Sphere must have been like for the eldest of our Deadhead family. The ones who remember seeing the Dead in those legendary venues on those very early dates! What a long wondrous strange trip it still is. I could never find the words to describe how grateful I am to be a part of this story and this family. I can hardly imagine how we would ever top this! But something new always comes up with the sun. Thanks to all of the band, crew and families for making this run a part of the legend. You know our love will not fade away. #deadforever

Not all people who are immensely talented are also heroes. It’s the kind of human you are that makes you a hero. It seemed like Bill Walton’s favorite thing to do was to inspire people to love life as much as he did. Whether it was in the joy of athletic competition or following the Grateful Dead. He made us want to embrace all the challenges that come in life with zeal and passion so we can truly savor our victories. He brought out the best in people. If his name ever came up in conversation everyone broke out into a big smile. His joy was as infectious as his gratitude. He never failed to inspire me to drop whatever self pity I had that day. I’m so lucky to be able to call him a friend. My heart goes out to Lori and his whole family. Our hearts are heavy today in the Grateful Dead community. A community that he loved so dearly. He embodied the best spirit the Grateful Dead world has to offer. And if you didn’t like him, then you’re probably not a nice person. We’re gonna miss u so very much Bill. I do not understand why. To be that gifted and equally as nice a person is a rare thing indeed. I LOVED his bass playing. And I ADORED his voice and singing. I count myself blessed to have been able to watch him live many times. Watching him with Kofi is something I’ll never forget. These experiences are the real treasures. Thank you for inspiring me Nick. And for being so f•••king nice. My prayers and condolences to his family and to the whole city of New Orleans on their loss. I’m sure this Jazzfest will different. I can tell what a musician is like at his core by the music he writes more than how he plays. It’s a lot easier to lie when you’re playing. We know how to cover things up with years of practice. But the songs one writes tell the inner most story. All you have to do is listen to Blue Sky (among others) to know his soul. That’s why I still play his music in my band. It’s healing, and timeless. I’m blessed that I got to pay tribute to him with his son @duanebetts so many times. What a great living legacy he left us in Duane. May we have many more opportunities to make magic together. Meet Sol and Luna! (For those that don’t know that means Sun and Moon.) If you use common sense you can see which one is which without me having to tell you! 😂 I call this pic: The Human Eclipse! Sol just happens to be born on my son’s birthday (1/26) and Luna just happens to be born on my mom’s birthday (12/24). If you believe in coincidence then this post will probably be almost meaningless to you. Anyway Sol did a beautiful and powerful Hapé ceremony for me. It was my first ever experience with Amazonian plant medicine. It’s non psychoactive and as I understand was done to balance my masculine and feminine poles and also to ground me to Mother Earth. And probably some other things that I can’t remember since I felt like I simultaneously went past our solar system and to the molten core of the earth! I seem to remember that Chakras were involved….. Thank you so much Sol for this and for teaching me so many other things. I got my wings and my safe landing spot all at once! Then I went to play our gig for the @texas_eclipse with a bum finger that I got 4 stitches out of only 7 days prior. Only now with no fear. If you have the good fortune to meet some priestesses like these ladies you are lucky indeed. If you believe in THAT sort of thing. These are just a few meaningful moments from the last few cycles. As I get older I learn how to savor much better than I used to. I hold the sweet moments in my mouth like a jolly rancher and never bite it. Why rush through such moments when they are already so fleeting? Seeing my beautiful wife and children become friends with such amazing musicians like @giovannihidalgoofficial and @karlpperc who are also such spiritually powerful beings couldn’t make me any happier. Happy Birthday Bill Burbridge aka Papa Elf! The Icelandic Elves have four special days. New Years Eve, Summer Solstice, Dec 24th (my mom’s birthday), and Jan 6th (My dad’s birthday & the 12th day of Christmas.) I believe this is why the Elves made themselves known to us while we were recording in Iceland. I make offerings to them on these days. I apologize for missing New Year’s Eve this time! But I did catch it this morning right after midnight. I speak to them out loud and I do it respectfully. You might want to try it. Especially today. Though any day is fine. By the time I started to make records around 1992 CD’s had taken over. This is the first time I made my own record on vinyl and it really surprised me what a strong feeling it gave me! It was kind of like a session I did “recently” where we recorded to actual 2 inch tape. When the engineer rewound the tape I forgot about the sound that it made and almost got vertigo it was such a surprise. Being born in 1964 I clearly remember both 45’s and even 78’s. Some of you might have to look up what those were! Double albums were always special too. So this was a real treat to open because it’s the first time it was actually mine.
