Roots Rock Revival Recap 2022
We're back from Roots!
Well it’s hard to believe that our music camp Roots Rock Revival is now 9 years old! Wow, did that go fast!
Some of our students (who were still kids when they started coming to camp) recently sold out the Beacon Theater with their band Trouble No More! Talk about full circle! They made Uncle Butchie and the rest of the teachers very proud.
This year, Roots seemed like it was running on spiritual jet fuel. The inspiration ran deeper and soared higher than ever. We deliberately pushed past our personal boundaries and stepped intentionally into the unknown. Special thanks to John Medeski for always being our Professor Dumbledore and Amy Helm for creating the Roots Rock Choir. Their rendition of Brokedown Palace brought me to tears.
But in addition to seeing the musical growth of our students amazingly keep pace with their physical growth, I also got to see the camp through my kids eyes. Being in the Catskill mountains at literally the perfect time of year provided my four & seven year old with all the natural wonders. We saw at least four deer a day, so many rabbits and a baby black bear run across the road and up into the woods on our way to breakfast. Nigel even found an orange newt that he named “Buddy” during one of the many hours he spent exploring in the creek. All the kids from age 4 to 14 made fast and probably lifelong friends.
We had meditation in the morning, massages and sound healing, painting creek side and spontaneous outdoor jams indoors, outdoors, at lunch….. It was perfect.
Special thanks to Roosevelt Collier and Ray Ray for bringing their Sacred Steel magic and fulfilling the Revival part of Roots Rock Revival.
Ask anyone that went this year. Or go check out the Facebook page. You’ll see what a magical, meaningful time was had by all. Trust me, the 10th anniversary is not something you want to miss next August. We’re gonna be coming in HOT!
